In 2019, Oeconomia and AEDES conducted a cost study of services in 19 health facilities in Burundi (8 health centres, 4 district hospitals, 2 regional hospitals, 2 national hospitals and 3 national specialized centres) on both ambulatory and hospitalization care. The study introduced a diagnosis-related group (DRG) approach for hospitalized cases and lays the ground for a per-case payment for inpatient care in Burundi. The costing of health services ultimately aimed to revise the pricing system of health services in the frame of a combined Performance-Based-Financing (PBF) scheme and a free care mechanism.
